1899 saw a spate of books on the recently acquired American Empire with pompous titles such as "Our Island Empire" or "Our Islands and their People" [ Hawaii, the Phillipines, Cuba and Puerto Rico]. Both books spoke of the "enthusiastic reception" given the invading troops by Puerto Ricans. . Two of the territories became independent, one joined the USA as a state, one, my own, has remained a colony without rights to this very day.Manuel Zeno Gandía is probably the greatest Puerto Rican novelist. What is not usually known is that in 1899, as one of PR's two commissioners in Washington, he produced a report detailing the sad conditions on the island and proposing a series of
structural changes to improve the island's status; autonomic changes leading eventually to independence. and exposing the supposed "lack of resistance" touted by both North American authors as an imperially manufactured lie. I frankly thought I'd never find it, but lo and behold, now I own a hard copy of a facsimile of the document, a must-have for the library of any Puerto Rican interested in the intricate web of deceptions that constitute the foundational myth of Puerto Rican history. Please, buy it.
