SERIES PREMIERE. Emmet Quinlan, an old widower rattled by dementia, isn't just a problem for his children—his violent outbursts are more than the local cops can handle. When a tornado levels his home—as well as the surrounding West Texas town—a restored Quinlan rises from the wreckage. The enchanted sword at the eye of the storm gives him more than a sound mind and body, however. He's now the only man who can face the otherworldly creatures the sword has drawn down to the Lone Star State...“So much fun to watch creators fi nd that next level. Go, Cates, go!”—BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS

What I like about this story is that it appears to take place in an area that I am familiar with. The fear that the sheriff and Roy's family had about Roy's dad was believable. I wish the story would continue and now I'm forced to wait for the next issue. What I dislike about this book was that I am not sure what hero we would expect from the story.Product details

God Country #1 eBook Donny Cates Geoff Shaw Jason Wordie John J Hill Reviews
Neat. A Cormac McCarthy-inspired comic book (begins with a quote from Blood Meridian), opening up in Texas with a man whose father has Alzheimer's and wants to kill the intruders in his house, who turn out to be his son's family, including his granddaughter. There's melancholic family drama, with a wife whose clearly had enough of exposing her daughter to the toxicity of her father-in-law, Emmett. Yet, by the cover, it's clear that this is a fantasy story, and how this unfolds is pretty neat.
Donny Cates's dialogue and narration is good, perhaps not quite McCarthy good (but who is, really?), and the artwork and coloring by Geoff Shaw and Jason Wordie is excellent. The drawings and dark coloring portray a rugged realism. Character faces are long and angular, and there are several impressive landscape shots. The artwork doesn't show a strong attention to detail, but what's clear is that Shaw loves to draw rabbits. This could be good for the long haul.
Time to slay some demons! Great story and visuals! A classic in the making! Can't wait to read the next issue!
